WHAT HAPPENS TO THE STUDENTS’ COLLEGE LIFE?
College dorm roommate conflict is a historical problem in the USA. The first two years, college students are required to live on campus, but from the national report only 37.9% of college students are very satisfied with their roommates, while above 40% of students are very dissatisfied with their roommates.
Furthermore, 63.5% of undergraduates feel lonely or homesick frequently or occasionally, and even worse is, 44.4% of undergraduates think they are isolated from campus life. All these data caught the project team's attention; we decided to figure out the cause for this.
TELL ME THE STORY ABOUT YOUR COLLEGE LIFE
Five universities's students involving freshman undergraduates to graduates wewe interviewed by the project team. We tried to understand the difference between the dorm life they expected and the life they met. We heard both pleasant and unpleasant stories. From these stories, we gathered that students' experience either a feeling of confidence or loneliness form the roommate relationship. These stories also corroborated the results of the national report.
The causes of these experiences from both sides raged form confilicting hobbies, to personality, to even family background, and of course, their expectations as well. Individuals become comfortable and confident in their affection mainly in two ways: the first meeting rapport and the rhythmicity of the future disagreement solving.
BEFORE MOVING IN, I WANT TO KNOW YOU MORE
The primary task of this project is helping students find a potential compatible roommate so that they can improve their dorm life experience, as well as reduce the frequency of visits to the school's house department for dropping complaints about roomates. Especially from the first meeting, studnets expect their roommates to have a friendly behavior, and they try to do the same too, so they make an effort to share the same exciting topics, the same favorite songs or movies, and even the same living habits at the beginning of their new dorm life. However, if they hardly find the same elements to share, they begin to feel insecurity. And the feeling of insecurity will cause depression, anxiety, irritability, etc.
In our interview, they claimed that the insecurity sense mainly comes from the unpredictable future dorm life when living with a stranger, which directly results form current housing department matching approach. It is ture that the school gathered some information, what time to sleep and wake up, where is their favorite study location. Nevertheless, the students still complain that the roommates assigned by the school do not match the standards they submitted for selecting roommates. The students can't know what kind of person they will live with. Even though school creates a Facebook group for fresh students, however, in most of the scenarios, the group is usually inactive. Is there any other solution for helping students get more information before move in ?
WHAT DOES THE UNIROOMIE DO?
To solve the problem, the team is willing to create a smart mobile applications for these students who are in need of a roommate after registration for university/college.An app that not only has the feature of reviewing all the candidates but also has real-time channels of communication like text chat or video call. An app lets students create a matching roommate-oriented profile for presenting themselves in multi-dimensions.
Technically, the team has decided to use swipe-cards design method for matching in stead of the traditional scrolling down the list method. The team's aim to help the students stay more focused on each of the individual candidates rather than review many candidates simulataneously like window shopping. Moreover, the application will incorporation preference filter, which will increase the efficiency of finding roommates when they share some common favorite music, movie or books. In addition, the dominating color of this application will be set golden-gate-bridge orange, expected to enable students feel warmth and family.
WHAT IS NEXT?
The porject team tries to iterate the user testing by using the media fidelity prototype. Meanwhile, this team is interested in holding a school housing department stuff interview, so that they can figure it out on how to transfer all the matching data to school. Moreover, some other information such as the optimized number of students in one dorm for harmony roommate relationship will be further explored too.
